The West Virginia State University football team (2-1, 2-0 MEC) remained undefeated in conference play with a 47-27 road win at Concord (0-3, 0-2 MEC) on Saturday afternoon.

KEY PLAYERS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Concord went ahead 13-3 in the first quarter. The Mountain Lions scored after three plays on their second possession. A 26-yard punt return set up the touchdown drive. The point after try was missed. WVSU responded with a 13-play, 50-yard drive that stalled at Concord’s 13 yard line. Brennen Schmitt converted the 30-yard field goal attempt, 6-3. CU was able to score once more before the end of the first with a 57-yard touchdown pass, 13-3.
  • The second quarter was all West Virginia State. Schmitt pinned the Mountain Lions inside their own 10 yard line with a well-placed punt at the beginning of the second. David Juston then recovered a fumble on second down to turn the tide. Joel Felderrushed twice for gains of eight and six yards to get over the goal line, 13-10.
  • The Yellow Jackets took the lead, 16-13, with 6:12 left until halftime. They kept the ball mostly on the ground on the go-ahead drive. Donovan Riddickscored the TD with a three-yard scramble before the PAT was missed.
  • The ensuing kickoff was short and mishandled by the Mountain Lions to allow a recovery by State’s John-Miller Penn. A trick play by WVSU followed in which Nolan Johnson received a handoff on an end-around. He threw the ball back to Riddick on the other side of the field who then turned upfield for a 23-yard score, 23-13.
  • The Yellow Jackets scored one more time before the end of the first half with a 13-play, 56-yard drive that resulted in a 41-yard field goal by Schmitt, 26-13.
  • WVSU shut Concord out in the third quarter while adding two more touchdowns. Riddick dropped a 33-yard dime to Juwan Bunch in the end zone for the first score, 33-13. A blocked punt set up the second score. The Yellow Jackets set up on Concord’s 10 yard line and gave the ball to running back Tavis McAdoo who found paydirt on the first play, 40-13.
  • The Mountain Lions scored two consolation touchdowns in the fourth quarter with drives of 60 and 75 yards. State scored a touchdown in between on a drive set up by an AJ Joyceinterception. Felder capped the drive with an 18-yard run for a touchdown.
